Dear Insurance Company: “We’ve Never Paid for That Before” Isn’t a Repair Standard

We appreciate your consistency. Really. Every time we submit a supplement that includes an OEM-required calibration, you show up with the same tired line:
“We’ve never paid for that before.”
And yet… here we are. With a brand-new car, a very clear repair procedure, and a radar sensor that needs calibration or it’ll start braking for highway signs.
So let’s clear something up:
Your payment history is not a repair guide. It’s a record of things you’ve denied that should’ve been done.
You Don’t Get to Define What’s Necessary Just Because You Didn’t Pay for It Last Week
“We’ve never paid for that before” is not a valid reason to skip a safety procedure.
By that logic:
We’d still be using lead paint.
Cars would have lap belts only.
And nobody would ever get reimbursed for a battery because “we didn’t pay for that last year either.”
ADAS systems didn’t exist in most vehicles ten years ago. Now? They’re in everything from luxury SUVs to entry-level sedans.
And they don’t work if you ignore calibration procedures just because it’s “new to your system.”
Here’s What We’re Going to Keep Doing:
Following OEM documentation
Performing required calibrations
Documenting everything
Refusing to deliver an incomplete or unsafe vehicle
Whether or not it’s on your historical list of “things we’re used to paying for.”
Final Word: If You’re Using Past Payouts to Dictate Present-Day Repairs, You’re Already Behind
We’re not in the business of making history. We’re in the business of fixing cars — safely, completely, and by the book.
So while you’re still catching up, we’ll keep doing it right.
And no, your spreadsheet isn’t an override button for engineering.
