Dear Vehicle Owner, You’re Allowed to Push Back When Insurance Says “No”

We know what it’s like. You’re in a collision, you just want your car fixed, and the insurance company seems confident when they say:

“That’s not necessary. We’re not paying for it.”

But here’s what they’re not telling you:

Just because they won’t pay doesn’t mean it’s not required. And you’re the one who’s going to be driving the car, not them.

You have the right to ask questions. You have the right to request documentation. And you have the right to demand your vehicle is repaired to the manufacturer’s standards — not someone’s cost-saving policy.

What to Do:

  1. Ask the shop if any safety systems (ADAS) were affected.

  2. Request OEM documentation (from the car manufacturer) that shows what procedures are required.

  3. If the insurer denies it, ask them to provide written liability acceptance for skipping that procedure.

Spoiler: they usually backtrack.
